Nudging Sustainability at Ferrero: A Social Sustainability Manager’s perspective

Meet Phyllis, one of our very first Ferrero Nudge Challenge graduates who later returned to support the Nudge programme as a peer coach several years after completing her involvement in 2014. The programme is a unique and valuable experience, she says. More importantly, it provides a safe space for young people interested in sustainability. We couldn’t agree more!

Empowering Change Through Education

When I first participated in the Nudge programme the format did not include individual projects. However, since taking part in the challenge, I was able to help spearhead the hazelnut value project using the skills and learning I gained with Nudge. This project involved working with local NGOs in Turkey to provide education to the children of hazelnut farmers in order to help prevent them from becoming child labourers. We also helped educate farmers on the importance of avoiding child labour.

Beyond Corporate Boundaries

Nudge provided intensive leadership training that encouraged me reflect on my personality and leadership style. This type of mentoring is unique and not usually included within corporate training programmes. The opportunity to network with people from various backgrounds, both from large companies and social entrepreneurs, was very beneficial for my career development. It has allowed me to connect with people with similar backgrounds and passions and to share challenges and solutions.

Lesson Learned

Two key moments stand out from my experience with Nudge. One was being selected as a finalist in the challenge and delivering a 2-minute pitch to the entire team. I didn’t win, but it was an intense and supportive competition that I’ll always remember.
I strongly believe that Ferrero’s partnership with Nudge is a valuable tool to engage with sustainability issues. Since my participation, Nudge has evolved greatly. It now covers a larger network of companies and experts and adds value to Ferrero by showing concrete engagement in sustainability development.

Final Thoughts for Prospective Participants

I would definitely recommend Nudge to anyone who is strongly motivated to understand and incorporate sustainability into their work. Nudge offers a unique experience, especially in terms of external engagement, learning about sustainability, and networking.
